Your day is your own on this unique day trip. Step back in time and spend the day hopping on and off classic diesel trains as you explore a few villages set deep in the Derbyshire countryside.
This is a beautiful part of the country to discover. Because you’re on an older locomotive, you’ll have plenty of time to admire the view as you travel between the four main stops on this line – Wirksworth, Idridgehay, Shottle and Duffield.
You’ll be travelling on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. This is a community owned venture that aims to encourage more local train services, as well as honour the great locomotive history of the area. You can travel to this experience by mainline rail services to Duffield station, where you’ll be able to switch from a Network Rail train to a much more exciting vehicle!
These are exciting locations for anyone interested in England’s past. Wirksworth is listed in the Domesday Book (which dates back to 1086) and was granted its market charter by Edward I in 1306. Today, it’s still a market town – visit on a Tuesday if you want to attend!

What happens on the day?
This exciting train rover experience is available every weekend and some weekdays. Do bear in mind that these are Heritage Diesel trains – they’re different to modern trains but they’re not the same as steam trains. Your rover pass allows you to board and alight at all the stations as many times as you want during the day. There is a buffet cart on some of the trains and there are other catering services at the four stations: Wirksworth Station, Idridgehay Station, Shottle Station and Duffield Station.....
